Two trains, one charging from Los Angeles, the other from San Francisco, barrel toward each other on a single track, and hamstrung railway execs realize too late that deranged engineer Jim Waterman (Paul L. Smith) has sabotaged the computer-locked line. In this 1970s hair-raiser, dispatchers fumble, secret serviceman Al Mitchell (Lloyd Bridges) throws his weight around, and con man Stuart Peters (William Shatner) isn't all that he appears to be.
