In 1955, idealistic college student Philippe (Marco Hofschneider) travels from Paris to Virginia on a scholarship and encounters an entirely new world of American football, jazz, romance -- and violent racial prejudice. Philippe doesn't understand why his well-meaning new friends advise him not to pursue April (Robin Givens), an African American woman, and he begins to fall in love with her despite the dangers.
